Questions people actually ask me

FAQ.

If your question isn’t here, email me — I’ll add it and the answer.

The basics

4 questions
Is matched betting legal in the UK?+

Yes. It’s not gambling — you’re placing hedged bets and keeping the bookies’ promotional cash. HMRC doesn’t tax gambling winnings in the UK, so the money is tax-free.

Is it actually risk-free?+

Mathematically yes, if you follow the calculator. The only real risks are human error (placing the wrong lay stake) and a match being voided. Use the calculator every time.

How much can I realistically make?+

Roughly £500 from sign-up offers over a few evenings. After that, reload offers can net ~£50/month of low-effort cash. It’s side-hustle money, not a career.

Do I need any gambling experience?+

No. Matched betting is mathematical, not gambling. People who don’t watch sport usually pick it up faster — no bad habits to unlearn.

Getting started

4 questions
Do I need any money up front?+

About £150 to start is ideal. Your qualifying bets are real bets — the money comes back (minus ~50p per offer) once they settle.

Which exchange should I open first?+

Smarkets. Lower commission than Betfair and a friendlier interface. You can open the others later.

What if I’ve never placed a bet in my life?+

Perfect. Start with Guide 01 — the first four guides take you through your first matched bet step by step.

Is this site actually free?+

Yes. BetBoffins is brand new, and everything is free — guides, offer walkthroughs, calculator, tracker. I don’t use affiliate links.

Safety & gubbing

3 questions
What’s a gubbing?+

When a bookie flags you as a matched bettor and restricts your account (smaller stakes, no more free bets). It happens eventually. The aim is to clear each offer before it does. Guide 06 covers the dos and don’ts.

Will my bank flag this?+

Very unlikely — you’re moving tens of pounds, not thousands. If your bank asks, just say it’s sports betting. Honest answer.

Is there a danger I’ll develop a gambling problem?+

Matched betting isn’t gambling — but the bookie sites themselves are. If you have an existing gambling addiction, please don’t use this site. BeGambleAware.org has proper support.

The site itself

3 questions
Who’s behind BetBoffins?+

Just me, Luke. I worked in the industry many years ago and wanted to build this to help others. I was matched betting full time for a couple of years during and after University, and now I’m a developer — so I work on this for fun.

Why is this free?+

Because matched betting isn’t actually that hard once someone shows you. There are a bunch of paid services that dress it up with spreadsheet dashboards and urgency, and I don’t think beginners need that — they need someone to explain it honestly.

Do you use affiliate links?+

No, and I never will. Bookmaker affiliate programs pay per signup, which creates an incentive to push offers even when they’re bad. Everything on this site links to the bookmaker directly with no tracking.
