Cheltenham November Meeting 2026: matched betting when horses fall over

The three days

I'd argue the Sunday is underrated. The Gold Cup gets the TV billing and most of the offers, but an 18-runner handicap hurdle is in the 16+ band that already pays 4 places, and a bookmaker going to 5 or 6 there gives you more ways to land the gap than a 4th place on a 12-runner chase.

If you want a dry run first, the William Hill Showcase at Cheltenham on 23–24 October opens the course's season. It's the same track and the same jumps problems, three weeks earlier.

How the jumps break an each-way lay

If you've done extra places at Ascot or York, the back and lay are identical. Three things behave differently over fences.

Fallers and pulled-up horses

A horse that falls, unseats or is pulled up is a loser on every side: your bookmaker bet loses, and your exchange lays win. That part is simple. The effect you notice is on the places. In the 2025 Paddy Power Gold Cup, 12 started and 3 were pulled up, so only 9 finished. Fewer finishers means a horse that was never on the bridle can still walk into 4th or 5th. That helps an extra-place bet more often than it does on the Flat, where nearly every runner completes.

Soft-ground non-runners

November ground is often soft, and trainers pull horses on the morning. In 2025 three horses came out of the Gold Cup for unsuitable ground. That matters because a bookmaker's place terms follow the number of horses that come under starter's orders, not the number declared when you took the price. Standard handicap terms:

Non-handicaps pay 1/4 odds on 2 places with 5–7 runners and 1/5 odds on 3 places with 8 or more. The trap is a handicap sitting on 16 declared. One non-runner takes it to 15 and your standard 4 places becomes 3. If you laid the place part at the exchange before the withdrawal, check the number of places the exchange market states, and reread the bookmaker's extra-place wording to see whether it promises a fixed number of places or one more than standard.

Small Grade 1 fields

The top-class chases rarely draw big fields. That doesn't make them useless, just useless for extra places. Use them for price boosts, sign-up free bets and money-back specials, and save the each-way work for the handicaps.

What offers to expect

Again, this is the pattern from previous years, not a promise about 2026:

• Sponsor sign-up offers. Paddy Power sponsors the Saturday feature and has used it for new-customer promotions. In November 2023 it offered £40 in free bet tokens to new customers who deposited £10 and placed a bet at odds of 1/2 or bigger, on Gold Cup Saturday.
• Extra places on the handicaps. Expect a 4th place on the Gold Cup and a 5th or 6th on the Greatwood from the firms that compete on racing. Our William Hill Extra Places guide covers the mechanics.

Worked example: an extra place on a big handicap

The Coral Gold Cup on 28 November is the cleanest example, because 24 ran in 2025. Say a bookmaker pays 5 places at 1/4 and the exchange place market pays the standard 4. You back £10 each-way (£20 total) at 21.0. The place part at 1/4 odds is worth 6.0. You lay the win at 22.0 and the place at 6.4, on an exchange charging 2% commission.

• Win lay: £9.55 at 22.0 (liability £200.64)
• Place lay: £9.40 at 6.4 (liability £50.78)

You pay £1.42 most of the time and collect £58.58 when the horse finishes exactly 5th. Any single bet is much more likely to lose than win, so spread it across a few runners and a few races rather than staking big on one. Plug your own prices into the calculator on the day. And budget for the liability: £251 locked up on a £20 bet is normal for a 20/1 shot.

The rest of November

The November Meeting starts three weekends of big jumps racing, and they're worth very different amounts to a matched bettor.

The Betfair Chase is a great race to watch and a poor one to work. With five runners you get 2 places at 1/4 at best, and the 2025 winner went off at 10/11. Leave it alone unless a boost is genuinely big.

The Coral Gold Cup is the reverse. A full field of 24 over three miles and two furlongs, on the Saturday of Newbury's two-day meeting, with Coral as sponsor. If you only do one jumps handicap before Christmas, do this one. One quirk from 2025: Panic Attack won both the Paddy Power Gold Cup and the Coral Gold Cup, at 6/1 and then 16/1.

Before 13 November

1. Work through the sign-up offers now. Paddy Power, Coral, William Hill and Unibet all sponsor races this autumn. Opening accounts two months early means they're verified long before Gold Cup Saturday. The sign-up offers index has them sorted by profit.
2. Fund your exchange for place liabilities. The worked example above ties up £251 on a £20 bet. Two or three of those in one afternoon adds up.
3. Practise at the Showcase. Do one extra-place lay on 23 or 24 October while the stakes are small and nobody's rushing you.
4. Check non-runners on the morning. On soft ground, look again just before you place. A handicap moving from 16 runners to 15 changes your place terms.

A realistic expectation

Across the three days, a methodical matched bettor with the main racing accounts open might make £30–£80 from extra places and money-back offers, plus whatever sign-up offers you still have left. It's lumpy. You could do everything right on Saturday and finish down £10, then have one horse run into 5th on Sunday. Judge it over November as a whole, with the Coral Gold Cup included, rather than race by race.
